Theo Grandy

Theo Grandy (born October 7, 1919 in Elchingen ; † October 31, 1987 ) was a German journalist . From 1955 to 1957 he was director of the Berliner Rundfunk and from 1957 to 1961 editor-in-chief of the SED newspaper “ Berliner Zeitung ” in the GDR .

Life

Grandy, son of a master wheelwright, attended elementary school from 1925 to 1931 and the grammar school in Rottenburg am Neckar from 1931 to 1933 . In 1932/33 he was a member of the Catholic youth association Bund New Germany . From 1934 to 1937 he trained as an electrician and then worked in Bopfingen . In 1938 he was first drafted into the Reich Labor Service , then into the Wehrmacht . He was a radio operator in an air communications regiment and was used as a fighter pilot during World War II . As a sergeant , he was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1941. In 1942/43 he attended the 2nd Antifa school in Oranki under Rudolf Lindau . In 1943 he joined the National Committee for Free Germany (NKFD) and from 1944 did press and radio work for the NKFD in Moscow .

In December 1945 he returned to Germany and became editor of the “ Deutsche Volkszeitung ” in Berlin . In 1946 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1946 to 1950 he worked as an editor at the central organ of the SED " Neues Deutschland ". From 1950 to 1952 he was deputy or chief editor of the " Landes-Zeitung " in Schwerin . From 1951 to 1954 he completed a distance learning course at the party college "Karl Marx" . In 1952 Grandy became editor-in-chief of the " Ostsee-Zeitung ". He was a member of the SED state leadership in Mecklenburg . In 1953 he was briefly editor-in-chief at the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR , at DEFA Berlin and " BZ am Abend ". From 1953 to 1955 he was finally deputy editor-in-chief of the “ Tälichen Rundschau ”. From 1955 to 1957 he was the director of the Berlin Broadcasting Corporation and in 1956 was a member of the college of the State Broadcasting Committee . From December 3, 1957 to December 19, 1961 he worked as editor-in-chief of the “Berliner Zeitung” (successor to Erich Henschke ). He was recalled for allegedly "immoral" behavior. Grandy was a member of the SED district leadership in Berlin from 1958 to 1961. He later worked as an editor for the magazine "humanitas".

Grandy died at the age of 68 and was buried in the VdN facility of the central cemetery in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde .
