Kaspar Hofmann (often Caspar Hofmann ; * around 1551 in Ochsenfurt , † March 2, 1623 in Vienna ) was a German Benedictine priest and abbot of Melk Abbey .

Life

Hofmann made his profession in Melk on November 2, 1571 and became prior of the Benedictine monastery in 1575 . In 1578 he took over the business of government from the abbot of Klein-Mariazell before becoming abbot of the Altenburg monastery in 1583 . In 1587 he was elected Abbot of Melk, which was only confirmed by the Pope on September 11, 1590 . As early as 1587 he was appointed councilor of the estates, and in 1589 he was appointed imperial councilor and president of the spiritual council.

Hofmann fought Protestantism in the Melk area. During the time of the Second Upper Austrian Peasant Uprising from 1594, Hofmann acted as a negotiator. In 1597 he was also given the administration of the Ybbs Cistercian convent and the Säusenstein monastery . In 1608 he worked in Prague as a negotiator in the disputes between the later Emperor Matthias and Emperor Rudolf II and as a representative of the Austrian prelates at the Reichstag in Pressburg .

Hofmann was mainly based in Vienna due to his diverse official duties, which is why, against the will of his community in Melk, he entrusted the Reform Benedictines of the Tegernsee monastery with the administration of the monastery. He hoped it would improve discipline in Melk Abbey. In 1618 his attempt to found an Austrian Benedictine congregation failed.

The Kaspar-Hofmann-Weg in Ochsenfurt was named after Hofmann .
