Reiner von Landau

Reiner von Landau (birth name Johannes Landau) (* 1585 in Paderborn ; † August 19, 1637 ) was an abbot of Melk Abbey .

His family moved from Paderborn to Lower Austria when he was a child . He entered the Jesuit order at a very young age . He studied in Würzburg from 1603 and taught rhetoric and mathematics there from 1607. In 1613 he entered the Benedictine order . There he took his religious name Reiner. From 1614 he studied theology in Vienna and Bologna . In Vienna, in addition to the position of prior treasurer and rector of the University of Vienna (at that time an honorary position), he and his family were later elevated to the nobility by the emperor. In 1623 he was elected Abbot of Melk. During his tenure, the number of monks in Melk had doubled. He is described as strict but fair. He encouraged the fraternal togetherness of the monks in the monastery.
