Bavaria SA is a Colombian brewery and former beer brand based in Bogotá . The company, founded in 1889, is today the largest beer producer in Colombia and the second largest in South America with a production of 331 million hectoliters (2016) . Bavaria SA has been part of the beer giant SABMiller , a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev , since October 28, 2005 . The company employs over 16,000 people and has production facilities in all major cities in Colombia, as well as in Ecuador , Peru and Panama .
history
The German emigrant Leo S. Kopp from Offenbach am Main (affectionately called "Don Leo" in Colombia) founded his company on April 4, 1889 at the age of 31 under the name "Kopp's Deutsche Brauerei Bavaria" in the Colombian capital Bogotá, in the district of San Diego, (today in the district of Santa Fe ) between Carrera 7 and Calle 28, opposite the Museo Nacional de Colombia . Within a few years, Leo Kopp managed to convert Colombians , who are used to chicha (corn schnapps) and guarapo (fermented sugar cane juice), to drinking beer.
Kopp's beer was initially too expensive for the poorer population of Colombia. It was not until the 100th anniversary of Colombia's independence in 1910 that a cheaper beer was brewed that was accessible to all classes. This did not detract from the success of the brewery, after all Bavaria still produces the most popular beer brands in Colombia with the beers Póker , Águila and Club Colombia . As a result, it has a nearly 98% monopoly on the Colombian market.
Today there are buildings of large commercial enterprises on the site of the former Kopp's German brewery Bavaria. From the first beginnings of Leo S. Kopp as a German brewer, the large Cervecería Bavaria , which today functions as Grupo Empresarial Bavaria , became the only Colombian company that survived the 19th century .
The former Kopp'sche brewery
However, the more recent history of Bavaria was written by the richest family in Colombia, Santo Domingo, a success story that the world economy rarely allows. Through the expropriation of the Kopp family, which went to the German Reich as a result of Colombia's declaration of war , Julio Mario Santo Domingo came into possession of 75% of the shares in the Kopp'sche brewery. The Santo Domingo family took an early interest in international markets. However, the political conditions in Colombia were unattractive for foreign investors. For example, the first step was to buy up Latin American breweries in order to get involved in the global beer market after regional markets had been conquered. In a short time, the Santo Domingo clan dominated an almost monopoly of breweries in Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Chile and Bolivia. In July 2005, Bavaria went to the South African-British group SABMiller.
The selling price was 7.8 billion US dollars, of which the Santo Domingo family, with Alejandro Santo Domingo at the top, received 15 percent in SABMiller shares. According to the Philipp Morris Intl. today she owns the second largest block of shares. SABMiller currently has a serious competitor in Latin America, the world's No. 1 brewer, the Brazilian company Inbev , a subsidiary of the Belgian Interbrew .
