The Bay class was a series of seven fast container ships that were built in the Japanese shipyard Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) in Kure for the shipping company P&O Containers. The Jervis Bay was launched as the first ship in June 1992 .
All seven ships were scrapped in Asia in 2014.
history
The Bay class ships were for P&O Containers Ltd. for the Europe-Far East service. For a traditional round trip from Southampton via the Panama Canal to Yokohama and back, you need an average of 63 days.
The ships were sold to the German capital investment company MPC Capital in 2004 as part of a $ 284 million package of eighteen P&O Nedlloyd and Blue Star container ships . The ships are managed by the Hamburg company ER Schiffahrt, which belongs to Rickmers Reederei . After having changed names several times, they went on charter with various container shipping companies.
Technical specifications
The ships of the Bay class of P & O Nedlloyd were fast-container ships with spaces for 4,224 TEU - containers , of which 2,273 TEUs on deck and 1,951 TEUs below deck. With a homogeneous loading of the containers with 14 tons, 3,097 TEU could be loaded on board. There were connections for 240 refrigerated containers, 66 of them below deck and 174 on deck.
The ships were 292.15 meters long and 32.20 meters wide. They belonged to the Panamax class. Her maximum draft was 11.20 meters. The ships were propelled by a nine-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type Sulzer 9 RTA 84 C, which acted directly on the propeller. Four Wärtsilä diesel generators with an output of 1500 kW each were available to generate the on-board and working electricity. A wave generator produced 2000 kW of electricity during operation at sea. Equipped with the most modern control and navigation systems, nine officers and ten seamen were sufficient to monitor and maintain the ship's operations.
