The official gate on the former AEG factory premises in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen

The " Beamtentor " at the Brunnenstrasse  107 in Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen served for the " official " ( employees / salary earners ) and visitors for access to the then largest Berlin plant of AEG . The gate, designed by master builder Paul Tropp at the end of the 19th century , was reworked by Franz Schwechten in its current representative form in 1896/1897 and is now a listed building .

"AEG" in Eckmann script

The flat pointed arch of the main portal stretches between the two side towers, which are reminiscent of the pinnacles of Gothic brick churches. Crabs occupy its eyelash-like gable and a pinnacle crowns its top. The words “Allgemeine Elektricitaets-Gesellschaft” run along the arch of the main portal, at the top there is a quatrefoil with an inscribed square, which instead of a religious symbol shows a cog as a symbol of industry.

Above the pedestrian passages in the two towers there are mosaics executed by the company Puhl & Wagner with the acronym “AEG” in the first modern font of the 20th century, the Eckmann script . At the top of the tower, further mosaics show lightning bolts and stars as symbols of electricity as well as trees of life , the fruits of which represent light bulbs - probably as a symbol of the life-giving power of the Berlin electrical industry .

The official gate was often used in Gesundbrunnen as the center of various events. On February 27, 1906, on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of Emperor Wilhelm II, it was decorated with a flag, imperial crown, garlands and the emperor's initials.

The listed gate in front of the historically important location of the later Berlin global corporation reminds us of the early days of AEG, which has ceased to exist as a company since 1996.
