Beast Wars ( English : Beast Wars) is a 2007 Founded in Wellington Sludge - and Stoner Doom band.

history

Beastwars were founded by Nathan Hicke and Clayton Anderson with the intention of acting as a link between Kyuss and The Cult . Both musicians name these bands as central points of contact for their own musical concept. Hicke and Anderson invited James Woods as bassist and together they formed a purely instrumental music group. After Matt Hyde sang along from the audience to the pieces at the first appearance of the group, he was accepted into the group as a permanent singer. After further appearances in Wellington, the band recorded their first album within five days, due to audience demand. The self-titled debut was recorded and produced by Dale Cotton, who had previously worked for High Dependency Unit , Sola Rosa and Dimmer . The recordings were sent to the United States for mastering , where John Golden , who had previously contributed to the Faith No More album The Real Thing , mixed the album. Beastwars is designed as an apocalyptic concept album about the end of the world from the perspective of an alien . The following two albums were also based on this basic concept. The album was released on May 9, 2011 via the sub-label Destroy Records , which was set up by Universal Records for this purpose . It received mostly positive reviews, reached 15th place in the New Zealand album charts on May 23 of the same year and was nominated for the New Zealand Music Awards as the best rock album and album with the best cover design. The group received the award for the artwork designed by Nick Keller; as best rock album, however, Ignite was awarded by Shihad . Since then, Beastwars have performed with High on Fire , The Melvins , Kyuss Lives! , Helmet , Broozer , Black Cobra and Fu Manchu . Two years after this debut album, Beastwars released their second album, Blood Becomes Fire, on April 19, 2013 . It was produced by Cotton and, like its predecessor, received mostly positive reviews. The album reached second place on the New Zealand album charts. In the following years the group continued to perform in New Zealand and Australia. The third studio album, The Death of All Things , followed on April 22nd, 2016, and reached fifth place on the New Zealand album charts on May 2nd. The musicians ended the band's history with The Death of All Things for the time being and disbanded the group.

In October 2017, the band announced that Matt Hydes had non-Hodgkin lymphoma . At the same time, the band released a number of T-shirts and vinyl versions of their albums, which were to be sold to support the singer financially during therapy. In addition, the musicians initiated a small festival with the same purpose under the title Cancer Sucks . In June 2018, the band announced the singer's recovery and went on a small New Zealand tour.

After the performances, the group decided to record new material. In a statement, the group said that, despite the positive acceptance of the singer's treatment, "the band felt an urgent need to record new songs". Hyde's illness made the musicians aware of the importance and perspective of the band's members. IV was released in June 2019.

style

Beastwars are mainly classified as sludge and stoner doom , while other facets of the music include doom metal , hard rock and southern rock . Hickey describes the idea behind the music as an attempt to combine the melody phrases from The Cult with the groove and riffing of Kyuss.

According to handwritten-mag.de, the music is based on a “heavy guitar riff”, while the rest of the music is arranged around the riffing. Metal news also confirms this impression. The mescaline injection site also confirms the importance of guitar playing and names “guitars on full drumming” as the hallmark of the group. As further core elements of the sound “a viciously grumbling bass and percussion that goes through the bone” are named. On metal news, the rhythm is located "between hard, pounding passages and calm, atmospheric riffs".

In addition to playing the guitar, singing is often emphasized. The singing is described as barking and roaring. Hydes is certified as an "extremely hoarse organ", which is sometimes said to be soul . To narrow down, Hydes was compared on the one hand with Joe Cocker , on the other hand, his singing was described as supposedly drunk . According to mescaline injection, "the tortured [...], weathered [...] (and whiskey-embalmed [...]?) Grater voice [...] fits exactly into the group's instrumental structure". According to handwritten-mag.de, however, "[Matt Hydes] screams and moans his way through the songs as if there is no tomorrow, but without radiating glamor and uniqueness."
