Bebop & Beyond was an American jazz band that existed in the 1980s and 1990s.

Band history

The formation Bebop & Beyond was launched as a repertoire ensemble; musically, the band dedicated itself to the interpretation of the modern jazz canon. At the same time it was initiated as a not-for-profit musicians' cooperative, in which Benny Carter , Jimmy Heath and Orrin Keepnews also participated. It was founded in 1983 by saxophonist Mel Martin, who lives in San Francisco . On Mel Martin's first bebop and beyond production, which he recorded with John Handy , Warren Gale , George Cables , Frank Tusa and Eddie Marshall , the band members found Tadd Dameron's "On a Misty Night" and the Thelonious- Monk numbers “Evidence” and “Monk's Mood”. The following productions included: a. Involved guest soloists such as Dizzy Gillespie , Joe Henderson and Howard Johnson . After the last album in the founding line-up Bebop & Beyond Plays Dizzy Gillespie (1991), Martin put together a new ensemble under the old band name with guest soloists such as Bobby Watson , Jack Walrath and Mike Longo and devoted himself to his own compositions a.o. a. the music of Benny Carter.
