Mel Martin (born June 7, 1942 in Sacramento ; † November 2017 ) was an American jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , arrangement ).

Live and act

Martin studied at San Francisco State University and was in the jazz scene in the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1960s . In 1970 he worked with musicians such as Cal Tjader , Sonny White , Charles Earland , Cornell Dupree and Bernard Purdie on the soundtrack of the animated film Fritz the Cat . In the 1970s he played a. a. with Susan Muscarella , Cal Tjader, Mark Levine / Woody Shaw , Pete Escovedo and Bill Summers . In 1983 he recorded the album Other Side Up with bassist / guitarist Randy Vincent .

In 1983 Martin founded the formation Bebop & Beyond ; the debut album of the same name was created in 1984, with Warren Gale (trumpet, flugelhorn), John Handy , George Cables , Frank Tusa and Eddie Marshall . He also led the Mel Martin Band and played in the Benny Carter Tribute Band, in the fusion band Listen and with Tenor Conclave . He has also worked with Freddy Cole , McCoy Tyner , Joe Henderson , Freddie Hubbard , Dizzy Gillespie , Boz Scaggs , Carlos Santana and Tom Waits throughout his career . In the field of jazz he was involved in 41 recording sessions between 1970 and 2009.
