Harold J. Jones (* 27. February 1940 in Richmond (Indiana) ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Live and act

Jones attended Richmond High School and got into drums at the age of fourteen. He played from 1956 in Indianapolis with musicians such as Wes Montgomery and Freddie Hubbard . He received a scholarship from the American Conservatory in Chicago ; he also performed with various bands, such as the blues singer Roosevelt Sykes and Eddie Harris . At the age of 21, he toured Latin America and the USA with Paul Winter . He became known through his participation in Eddie Harris' Exodus album (1961). From 1967 to 1972 he was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald , Tony Bennett , Carmen McRae , Nancy Wilson and Sammy Davis, Jr. in the Basie band. In 1973 he appeared with Marlena Shaw at the Montreux Jazz Festival . He traveled with Benny Carter several times , around 1979 in Japan. He toured with Sarah Vaughan in the 1980s and performed with her at the White House . He also appeared on her Pablo albums Send In the Clowns (1981) and Crazy and Mixed Up (1982).

In the 1990s he accompanied Natalie Cole on her Unforgettable Tour . In 1994 he played with Dick Hyman at the San Francisco Festival . He also performs at festivals in his hometown such as the Indy Jazz Fest and teaches master classes at universities. Jones has appeared on a total of five Grammy- winning albums from Count Basie ( Warm Breeze , 1982), Sarah Vaughan ( Gershwin Live , 1982), BB King ( Live at the Apollo , 1990), Natalie Cole ( Unforgettable With Love , 1991 and Take a Look , 1993). He has also worked with Gene Harris , Quincy Jones / Sammy Nestico , Jeanie Bryson , Marian McPartland ( Plays the Benny Carter Songbook , 1990), Walter Norris , Diane Schuur and Clark Terry throughout his career .
