Live and act

Marshall played in his father's swing band at an early age and in rhythm and blues bands during his high school years. In 1956 he moved to New York and developed his style of drumming under the influence of Max Roach and Art Blakey . Two years later he played in the quartet of Charlie Mariano and Toshiko Akiyoshi ; After two years in the US Army, he returned to Akiyoshi's band in 1965. For a year he played with Mike Nock in the house band of the club "The Dom" in New York, during this time he also worked with Stan Getz and accompanied the singer Dionne Warwick on tours. In 1967 he was a member of the jazz rock band "The Fourth Way" in San Francisco , which, in addition to himself and Nock, also included Michael White and Ron McClure . From the Bay Area, Marshall toured with the band until their end in the early 1970s; then he played with Jon Hendricks and with the Pointer Sisters .

In the mid-1970s he worked with Bobby Hutcherson , also with John Klemmer , with Kenny Burrell and in 1977 with Art Pepper and Paul Nash . That year, Marshall's first album was created under his own name, "Dance of the Sun" with Hutcherson and George Cables as accompanying musicians. Around 1980 he played with Pharoah Sanders and with Ahmad Jamal . In 1984 he was a member of the formation "Bebop and Beyond" with John Handy and Cables. A heart operation that year temporarily prevented him from continuing his career as a drummer: in 1985 he switched to the recorder for his recordings for the album "California Meeting", but in 1987 he accompanied Toshiko Akiyoshi again as drummer on her trio album "Interlude". He also worked as a teacher at the San Francisco School of the Arts . His second album as a leader was made in 1999 (Holy Mischief) . At the beginning of the millennium he was responsible for music in the San Francisco Arts Commission for several years .
