Becharaji ( Gujarati : બેચરાજી) is a small town with about 13,000 and the capital of a municipality ( taluk ) with about 100,000 inhabitants in the north of the Indian state of Gujarat . The city is known as the pilgrimage center of a female Hindu deity named Bahuchara Mata, who is especially venerated by the Hijras .

location

Becharaji is located in the plain of northern Gujarat about 48 km (driving distance) south of the city of Patan or almost 100 km northwest of Ahmedabad at an altitude of about 46 m above sea level. d. M. The place has a small train station on a branch line; the nearest train station is in the town of Mehsana, about 37 km to the east . The climate is mostly hot and dry; Rain only falls in the summer monsoon season .

population

The Gujarati and Hindi- speaking population consists of approximately 96.5% Hindus and 3.5% Muslims ; other faith groups hardly play a role among the rural population of India. As is customary in northern India, the male population is around 8% higher than the female.

economy

Agriculture has traditionally played an important role in the entire district of Mehsana; In the cities or larger towns, handicrafts, retail trade and services are also important. However, pilgrimage tourism is the main source of income for the city of Becharaji.

How far back the religious significance of the place goes is unclear. The current name of the pilgrimage site is derived from the goddess Bahuchara Mata , who is worshiped by the Hijra community of India.

The domed main temple of the place ( Bahuchar Mata Mandir ) dates from the second half of the 18th century.
