Bedřich Bloudek (born March 24, 1815 in Křižanov in Moravia, † August 11, 1875 in Toplice Topusko ) was a Czech officer who took part in the Slovak uprising in 1848 .

Life

Bedřich Bloudek joined the Austrian army after attending school and began an officer career.

In the course of the 1848 revolution, Bedřich Bloudek was caught up in the ideas of Pan-Slavism . He took part in the Slavs Congress in Prague in the summer of 1848 and also distinguished himself in the barricade battles there in the course of the Whitsun Uprising in Prague . In the autumn of 1848 he took part in a leading position in the Slovak uprising . On September 16, 1848, he moved from Moravia to today's Slovakia as the leader of a free corps of around 600 men, most of which consisted of Czech students. The group, which was also joined by numerous Slovaks, reached Myjava , where two days later the independence of Slovakia from Hungary was declared. Bloudek continued his campaign to Brezová pod Bradlom , Senica and Stará Turá . In the end he was forced to withdraw to Moravia on September 28, 1848.

After the decision of the Austrian emperor to put down the rebellion that had broken out in Hungary, Bedřich Bloudek, like many representatives of Slovak interests, sided with the Viennese government. In November he became the commander of a Slovak volunteer corps, which was under Austrian command. By January 1849 he and his troops managed to bring large parts of what is now Slovakia under his control, but in April he had to retreat from the Hungarian army over the Jablunka Pass . As part of the campaign, he is said to have saved a large part of Prince Alfred zu Windischgraetz's supplies while retreating .

Bedřich Bloudek left the Austrian army as a lieutenant colonel and died on August 11, 1875 in the Toplice Topusko thermal bath in present-day Croatia.
