action

Brooke Dalton's purse was stolen, lost her cell phone on the way to the last train she missed, and is in desperate need of a ride from New York City to Boston . In Grand Central Station she meets the street musician Nick, who has been watching her and now wants to help her unselfishly. Nick suggests that they look for the bag at an exploitation facility that deals in stolen handbags. While Nick looks for the bag inside the building, Brooke asks two patrol officers for assistance. When they get hold of them, the bag merchants flee and Nick is injured.

Frustrated, Brooke and Nick head to a friend of Nick's wedding reception, hoping to raise money for Brooke's return trip to Boston. On the way there, the two get to know each other better. Brooke has gone to New York to buy a painting for her husband while Nick wants to audition for a band as a trumpet player.

Due to a wrong address, Brooke and Nick find themselves at an event where they are held for members of the band they had ordered. After the organizer promises them money and a hotel room for free use, Brooke and Nick begin an improvised performance in which they sing and play My Funny Valentine . When the real band appears, the two of them flee to the hotel room. Nick's attempt to organize a drive for Brooke from New York to Boston at the expense of the hotel room fails.

After the last chance of a night bus to Boston fails and Brooke no longer has any hope of arriving home in time for her husband's return, she calls a friend and asks her to break into her house and steal a letter that Brooke had previously sent for her husband had left behind.

Brooke and Nick find the right address for the celebration and meet Hannah, Nick's former fiancée, among others. After a short chat, Nick leaves the bar and tells Brooke the story of his relationship with Hannah and the painful breakup. At Brooke's urging, Nick returns to the bar and arranges a meeting with Hannah for the next day. He also learns that Hannah is pregnant.

Brooke and Nick drift through New York by night and encounter a clairvoyant who invites them to a free session. Brooke uses the opportunity to call her friend again to check whether she has taken the letter. When she learns the plan didn't work, Brooke is devastated. She explains to Nick that the letter she wrote would mean the end of their marriage. Brooke had found out that her husband had had a lover for months, with the letter Brooke wanted to end their marriage. In the earlier return of her husband, Brooke sees a sign that he has ended his affair and decided to marry Brooke and now wants to prevent their marriage from being jeopardized.

Nick and Brooke go to Nick's friend Danny's hotel room and spend the rest of the night talking together. The next morning the two return to Grand Central Station. At a phone booth, Nick pretends to call himself to explain to "his me" from the past that he will meet a woman he shouldn't let go because "his me" needs her more than she needs him. The two kiss one last time and Brooke takes the train to Boston, a smile on her face.
