The hairy poppy ( Papaver pilosum ) is a species of the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is based in Turkey . It is very similar to Papaver spicatum , another Turkish poppy seed.

External features

The perennial herbaceous plant reaches stature heights of up to 60 centimeters. A tuft of light green, slightly bluish leaves develops at the base of the plant. The toothed, lanceolate leaves are hairy and up to 15 centimeters long.

Several upright or ascending, branched stems grow out of the tuft of leaves , with two flowers at each end. The downward sloping flower bud forms on the wire-like, hairy flower stalks at the end of the stems. The upright, radial symmetry , hermaphrodite flower develops from the bud . The four pale orange petals overlap and look like crumpled paper; sometimes a whitish basal spot forms in them. Tightly around the ovary sitting around the many stamens with yellow anthers . The upper ovary is provided with up to eight rays at the top. The flowering period is May to June. The hermaphrodite flowers are pollinated by insects or they pollinate themselves .

The very small seeds escape from the openings under the lid of the slim, elongated club-shaped pore capsule when the plant sways in the wind. The seeds are spread by wind .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

The hairy poppy is native to Turkey in the floral regions of Bithynia and Galatia. There you can find it in the mountains on rocky ground in sunny to partially shaded places. The flowers follow the position of the sun throughout the day.

use

The hairy poppy is sometimes used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens. The very cold-resistant plant likes well drained, not too moist soils in partially shaded places. The plant usually takes care of further reproduction by sowing itself.

ingredients

The milky juice of the capsule contains poisonous isoquinoline alkaloids , including glaucine . The species is of no importance for the production of narcotics and especially for the production of opium .
