Behrendt Pick

Behrendt Pick (born December 21, 1861 in Posen , † May 4, 1940 in Berlin ) was a German numismatist .

Behrendt Pick attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm Gymnasium his hometown and studied from 1880 at the University of Berlin , where he in 1884 with the work De senatus consultis Romanorum Dr. phil. received his doctorate . On the advice of his doctoral supervisor Theodor Mommsen , he turned primarily to numismatics. For several years he worked as a librarian at the Royal Library . In 1888 he went to the University of Zurich , where he completed his habilitation in 1889 and was appointed associate professor for Roman antiquities, history and numismatics in 1891. In 1893 he moved to the ducal library in Gotha , where he was entrusted with the management of the coin cabinet (from 1899 with the title "director"). From March 6, 1896, he also taught ancient numismatics as an associate professor at the University of Jena . From 1903 to 1905 he organized and cataloged the “Academic Coin Cabinet of the University of Jena”. In 1911 the University of Jena appointed him honorary professor; In 1931, Pick stopped teaching.

In 1934 Pick was retired because of his "Mosaic Faith". He moved to Berlin, where he committed suicide in 1940.

For his services to numismatics, Pick received the medal of the Royal Numismatic Society in 1935 .
