Five Beijing bands:

Beijing Bubbles - Punk and Rock in China's Capital is a documentary by Berlin filmmakers Susanne Messmer and George Lindt from 2005 that was shot in the People's Republic of China .

content

The film accompanies five Beijing bands (Joyside, Hang on the Box, Sha Zi, New Pants and T9 aka Hanggai Band) during their rehearsals and performances, but also in their everyday lives. It gives an insight into the current punk and rock scene in China and into the emotions and thoughts of the young musicians who consciously oppose the traditional Chinese way of life. In addition to a musical inventory, Beijing Bubbles also takes a critical look at contemporary Chinese society.

Aesthetically, the film also corresponds to its punk attitude in terms of content , as the outdoor shots in public places in particular were made under difficult conditions and in some cases were only possible with a hidden camera.

Reviews

  • Variety (Mar 28/2006): Despite the obviously small budget, the film makes a pleasant noise and provides good insights.
  • PhillyIMC (March 30, 2006): The film is an entertaining jaunt to the other side of the globe, the music of which is very similar to ours.
  • ThirtyfourStreetmagazine : Apparently our punk rock roots have emigrated to China, where young anarchists and rebels are performing melodic chaos in small clubs and cellars.
  • Goon Magazin (18/2006): Beijing's music scene is seething. There is still a lack of self-image and nonchalance, but more and more often bubbles appear on the smooth surface of the soup in the large pot.
