Bela Toth

Bela Toth (born April 19, 1943 as Béla Tóth in Budapest ) is an Italian chess professional of Hungarian descent, who is international master in local chess and grand master in correspondence chess , and in 1978 European champion in this discipline.

Toth was born in Hungary, but has taken Italian citizenship.

Toth learned to play chess at the age of 13. In 1967 he took part in the Hungarian championship. After moving to Italy, he won the Italian championship four times , namely in 1975, 1976, 1980 and 1982.

In 1974 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master. His Elo rating is 2315 (as of March 2017), and his best rating of 2480 was achieved in January 1978.

Correspondence chess

In 1964 Toth played his first long-distance games. He qualified for the 11th European Championship, which he won in 1978. For this he received the title of International Master of Correspondence Chess . There was a long break from correspondence chess.

As a Swiss citizen, he was allowed to play for Swiss teams. For Switzerland he took part in the final of the 14th Correspondence Chess Olympiad from 2002 to 2004. For his score of 9 out of 11, the ICCF awarded him the title of Correspondence Chess Grandmaster .

National team

Toth took part with the Italian national team in the 1974 , 1976 , 1980 and 1984 Chess Olympiads , and in 1976 he achieved the second-best individual result on the second board.

In Switzerland, Toth used to play for Allschwil , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup three times , and SC Rössli Reinach , since 2009 he has played with SG Riehen in the National League A , and in the 2014/15 season also in the 1st Bundesliga . In Germany, Toth played for SK Zähringen from 1996 to 2000 (including in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons in the 1st Bundesliga), from 2000 to 2002 for SG Waldshut / Tiengen in the Oberliga Baden, playing since 2012 he at SC Brombach .

Publications

Toth wrote the opening works of the Queen's Gambit, Minority Attack, and The Russian Defense (1987). In the 1970s he was editor of the Italian chess magazine Italia Scacchistica , from 1983 to 1984 he worked for Die Schachwoche .
