Belfry (Thionville)
The belfry in Thionville , a town in the French department of Moselle in the Grand Est region , is a 14th century belfry . It is located on the Place du Marché and has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1980 .
history
The Counts of Luxembourg allowed the citizens of Thionville to fortify the city in 1239 and build a tall watchtower . This became a symbol of urban freedoms. After a previous tower was demolished, it was built together with the town hall and a hospital in the 14th century. The bell in the tower is attested to as early as 1363.
The tower consists of three floors with ribbed vaults , which were built in the 16th century. The upper part of the tower was renewed in 1699 and provided with a slated hood , which today has a roof knob with a weather vane . After the town hall ( Hôtel de Ville ) moved to the former Poor Clare monastery at the end of the 19th century , the buildings around the belfry were changed.
The clock in the tower was installed in 1859 by the Strasbourg clockmaker Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué .
