Bellerofonte Castaldi (* around 1580 in Collegara near Modena ; † September 27, 1649 ibid) was an Italian composer , lutenist , poet and adventurer.

Life

Castaldi was probably born in Collegara, about five kilometers southeast of Modena, in 1580 (or 1581). He came from a wealthy family, which allowed him to travel through Italy and Germany and otherwise indulge in idleness, which is interested in art. He was considered an adventurer and was known for his controversial and satirical poems as well as a virtuoso theorbist , singer and composer.

He spent most of his life wealthy in Venice and Modena. However, he kept getting entangled in Handel. For example, while trying to avenge his brother's death, he was shot in the left foot and limped for the rest of his life. Because of his sharp tongues he was banished from Rome by Pope Paul V.

Towards the end of his life his family property was completely destroyed during a border dispute between the Papal States and the Duchy of Modena, Castaldi died completely ruined in 1649.

Individual evidence

  1. All biographical details follow the information in Dolata 2006
  2. However, the Novus Partus sive Concertationes Musicae (Augsburg, 1617) by the French Jean-Baptiste Besard also requires a tiorbino . A discussion of the Tiorbino and a representation of the first page of the Capricci can be found on Francesco Nocerino's website .
  3. A digital reproduction of the front page on the website of Nicholas S. Lander ( Memento of August 11, 2011 in the Internet Archive ) ( JPEG file ( Memento of February 17, 2011 in the Internet Archive )). Note e.g. B. the twisted spelling of the name "Bellerofonte", which Lander sees as an expression of his eccentricity.
