The Bene Merenti Order of the Governing House ( Romanian Ordinul Bene Merenti al Casei Domnitoare ) goes back to a foundation of the Bene Merenti Medal founded in 1857 by the Prince of Hohenzollern , Karl Anton , and was granted by Decree No. 2836 of December 16 Adopted as an order by King Carol II in 1935 . It was intended to reward exceptional service rendered to the Romanian royal family .

Order classes

The order consists of four classes for men and three classes for women as well as an associated medal in three stages.

  • 1st class medal - gold-plated
  • Class II medal - silver-plated
  • Medal III. Class - bronze

Order decoration

The medal is a silver, gold-plated, white enameled paw cross with a black enameled wide border. In the white enamelled medallion, which is surrounded by a thick, light green laurel wreath , the two-line inscription BENE MERENTI . The reverse of the cross is white enamelled and shows in the medallion that is surrounded by a black enamelled ring, the crowned and mirrored initial C (Carol).

The cross of the 1st class is elevated by a crown, the III. 1st and 4th class is made of silver only and without enamel .

For military merit, the order could also be awarded with crossed swords through the cross angles.

The affiliated round medal is made of bronze and gold-plated or silver-plated in the 1st and 2nd class. It shows the right- wing portrait of Carol I with the inscription CAROLUS I REX ROMANIAE (Carol I King of Romania). In the reverse the two-line inscription BENE MERENTI , which is surrounded by a dense wreath of laurel (right) and oak (left) leaves.

Carrying method

The I. and II. Class of men was worn as a neck medal, the III. Class as a cross and the fourth class as well as the medal on the ribbon on the left side of the chest. Women only wore the award on a bow on the left side of the chest.

Others

By decree of March 8, 1940, Carol II revoked the order and replaced it with the Order of St. George , founded on the same day . From then on, the medal was formed by the Bene Merenti Cross for Rescue .
