Life

Bengt Berg's father Fabian Berg was a teacher in Kalmar. At the age of 13, Berg discovered his love for nature. Through references from the museum curator of Gothenburg, Gustav Kihlen, Berg came into contact with Professor Alexander Koenig in Bonn. He was Koenig's employee from 1909 to 1913 and the Bengt Berg bird collection is still one of the most important exhibits in the Alexander Koenig Museum . The University of Bonn awarded Berg an honorary doctorate in 1935.

In 1910 his first book was published under the title Stora Sjöfallet (German: Der Seefall). From 1912 he photographed the bird world in his homeland with a reflex camera. Further books with his bird photos appeared, including his first highlight in 1917, “ My friend, the plover ” (German edition 1925). In this way Berg gradually became one of the best-known pioneers of animal photography in Europe. In the 1920s he made his first trips to Africa and in 1928 he made an important contribution to saving the endangered eagles in Europe with his book “ The Last Eagles ”. In 1930 his most successful book " The love story of a wild goose " was published. In the 1930s he visited Asia, whereupon books about tigers, Indian rhinos and the Himalayas were written.

He created a park on an estate he bought in 1938, the Eriksberg Wildlife and Nature Park . His son Iens Berg took over the property after Bengt Berg's death in 1967.

On his numerous trips he also made movies:

  • 1925: Abu Markub , silent film about elephants and shoebills in Africa.
  • 1929: The last eagles , a film about sea eagles, spoken in German by Berg himself.
  • 1939: Longing for Africa , six boys from Germany listen to Berg's reports

  • "All of nature is harmony and we are created to harmonize with it."
  • "Because I know people, I love animals."
