history
There are more than a thousand prehistoric monuments in the municipality. Most of them lie in a wreath around the city of Kalmar and mostly date from the Iron Age . In 1987 archaeologists discovered the remains of an old settlement in Tingby, about 10 km west of Kalmar. It turned out that the place was already inhabited more than 8,000 years ago. This place is now considered to be the oldest known Scandinavian settlement. There is a stone circle not far from the main town's airport . It is believed that it belonged to the cemetery of a prehistoric village.
In the Middle Ages , a system of several observation towers was set up along the Baltic Sea coast for defense at sea. Some of these towers belonged to castle-like stone churches, from which one had a good view of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The churches were also places of refuge in the event of enemy attacks. The oldest church is in Hossmo and is dated to 1175. The most important tower stood right in Kalmar and later became the castle .
