Beni Daniels ( Japanese べ に , real name: Arashiro Beni 安良 城 紅 ; born March 30, 1986 in Okinawa Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese singer-songwriter . She made her debut in the Japanese music business in 2004 and signed her first record deal with Avex Trax .

After a record company change to Universal Music Japan in 2008 , she took her stage name Beni (proper spelling: BENI).

Life

Beni Daniels was born in Okinawa and moved to California and then Yokohama when she was a child . Her father is American with Indian roots , her mother is Japanese. Her musical style is inspired by Namie Amuro , Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson (her father's favorite singer), they say . She graduated from Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokosuka Naval Base , Japan. She also studied sociology at Sophia University .

As a child she wanted to be a singer and played the piano. Since her parents lived overseas, she traveled frequently between America and Japan. She reached the final at one of the largest auditions in Japan, the Kokuminteki Bishōjo Contest . When she sent a demo to the Japanese record company Avex Trax, the producers were delighted with her voice, appearance and pronunciation in English that they offered her a contract. Initially, she was a member of the Bishōjo Club 31 group . As the first of the band, she started a solo career. Their first single was called "Harmony" and was the theme song for the Japanese drama Reikan Bus Guide Jikenbo .

2004 to 2007: musical beginnings as Arashiro Beni , Avex Trax and commercial depression

With the debut single Harmony Beni was able to place herself in the top 30 of the Japanese Oricon charts and with more than 10,000 units sold, she was able to gain a foothold in the Japanese music industry. The following single Infinite ... , which was released in October 2004, was able to build on the success of the debut single, whereupon one month later, in November of that year, the third single Here Alone was released. Here Alone is their most successful solo single, if you refer to the sales of the CDs, as the single was sold more than 35,000 times. The single was placed at # 14, the weekly Oricon charts.

The success led to the first studio album Beni , which was released on February 9, 2005. It sold more than 20,000 copies and was ranked # 14 on the Oricon weekly charts. On the same day the single Miracle was released , but the success remained with a placement of # 98. Shortly thereafter, she released the singles Hikari no Kazu Dake Glamorous ( 光 の 数 だ け グ ラ マ ラ ス ) (June) and Cherish (December), which also remained unsuccessful.

The second studio album Girl 2 Lady followed on February 22, 2006 and was unsuccessful. With a chart stay of two weeks and a placement of # 93, Beni had to attribute a depression to her career. In September of that year she released her seventh single How Are U? and missed entry into the Japanese Oricon charts. This was followed in February 2007 by the single Luna , with which she made it back into the Oricon charts with a placement of # 77. Then the third studio album Gem was released in April 2007 , but remained unsuccessful with a placement of # 126. After this release, she was given the chance to perform two solo concerts held in Osaka and Tokyo . At the end of 2007 she worked as a presenter for Tokyo Kawaii TV .

2008 to 2011: New image as Beni

Beni in November 2008

Her first compilation and her last release under the name Arashiro Beni , she released on March 5, 2008, entitled Chapter One: Complete Collection . With a position of # 166 and only one week in the charts, the success failed again. After this compilation it was speculated that it would be their last release because of the name Complete Collection , eventually it was listed with the name Beni (spelling: BENI) for the collaboration with Dohzi-T Mō Ichido ( も う 一度 ) and the single was listed in June of the year published. To this day it is the most successful single by both artists. Without warning, their website was taken offline by Avex Trax in September under the name Arashiro Beni . In late October of that year it was announced that she was transferring her recording contract to the Universal Music Japan sub-label Nayutawave Records . Finally, it was also announced that it was now active under the name Beni . With the change, she wanted to usher in a new era in her music career and want to have more influence over her songs and want to help shape her songs by writing her own songs. The first single under her new stage name followed on December 10, 2008 with the title Mō Nido to ... ( も う 二度 と ・ ・ ・ ), which is the answer song to the collaboration Mō Ichido . The single sold more than 10,000 copies, reached # 20 on the Oricon charts, and went gold for 100,000 legal downloads.

The second single followed in April 2009 under the new stage name Kiss Kiss Kiss . Despite being ranked # 40 on the Oricon charts, the song reached # 1 on the RIAJ Digital Track Chart . This was followed by moderate singles such as Koi Kogarete ( 恋 焦 が れ て ) and Zutto Futari de ( ず っ と 二人 で ), until the first studio album was finally released under the new artist name. On September 2, 2009, their fourth studio album was released under the title Bitter & Sweet . With the placement of # 5 it reached the top 10 of the weekly Oricon charts for the first time. In addition, the album sold more than 100,000 times, which was her first major milestone. To celebrate the success, she released the single Kira Kira (KIRA ☆ KIRA ☆) on November 4, 2009 , which was on the album, but a music video was shot for it. There was no success.

In 2010, other singles followed such as Sign ( サ イ ン ) (January), Bye Bye (March) and Yura Yura / Gimme Gimme ( ユ ラ ユ ラ / ギ ミ ギ ミ ♥ ) (May). Of these singles, Yura Yura / Gimme Gimme was highlighted, as the single could reach # 20 in the Oricon charts and sell more than 5,000 times. A month later, she released her fifth studio album, Lovebox, on June 2nd . It is their first sound carrier to reach the top position in the Oricon charts, and the album has sold more than 50,000 times in total. This was followed by the singles Heaven's Door (August) and 2Face (November), of which 2Face was limited to 10,000 editions. It is speculated that the purchase of the single was limited to almost 2,000 pieces, as the single cost ¥ 1,980, an exclusive towel was included, which is why the price was so high. Her sixth studio album, Jewel, followed two weeks later .

On June 8, 2011, she released her 19th single Suki Dakara. ( 好 き だ か ら。 ), which was awarded gold for 100,000 legal downloads. This was followed by the singles Koe wo Kikasete / Crazy Girl ( 声 を 聞 か せ て / crazy girl) (September) and Darlin ' (October). Then her seventh studio album Fortune was released in November .

2012 to 2014: Covers series, commercial highlight and 10th anniversary

As her only single of the year, she released the single Eien ( 永遠 ) on January 25, 2012 . Finally, on March 21, she released her first cover album entitled Covers , which surpassed her previous successes. She covered popular Japanese songs in the English language and received a lot of attention because of it. The album peaked at # 2 on the Oricon charts and stayed in the charts for 69 weeks. So far, the album has sold almost 250,000 copies and has been nominated for best concept album at the World Music Awards , among others . In November of that year she released her second cover album, entitled Covers 2 , which was able to build on the same success.

The first single in this new era, Satsuki Ame ( さ つ き あ め ) was released on April 24, 2013. The single was more successful than their previous singles, but only reached # 41 on the Oricon charts and only sold nearly 4,000 copies. After the next summer single in June, Our Sky , Beni released her eighth studio album Red on July 31, 2013 . With a placement of # 7, it has sold nearly 20,000 times. This was followed by her third cover album entitled Covers 3 in December of that year. It was able to reach # 2 on the Oricon charts, but unlike the other two cover albums, it didn't break the 100,000 mark with more than 60,000 units sold.

In 2014 it was rather quiet about Beni, she only released her second compilation and first compilation under her stage name Beni on June 11 , with the title Best All Singles & Covers Hit Selection . This release is dedicated to their 10th anniversary on stage (also marketed as 10th Anniversary ) and includes their singles from their Beni era, as well as some songs from their Covers series. The two new songs included Mō Nido to ... Rebirth ( も う 二度 と ・ ・ ・ Rebirth) and Your Song . Mō Nido to ... Rebirth is a modified version of their original song Mō Nido to ... and Your Song is dedicated to their fans. She later released the downloadable single Fun Fun Christmas in October .

Since 2015: Undress and new concepts

She signed a contract with Pachinko in the spring of 2015, releasing her first pachinko game called CR Cat's Eye and promoting three new songs, Cat's Eye , Baby and Tattoo . The songs only found their release as part of their next single Forever ( フ ォ エ バ ) in August of that year. In addition, the song of the same name from the single Forever was sung about on their concert tour in 2014 and yet the single only reached # 85 on the Oricon charts. Finally, another studio album with the title Undress followed on November 25th of that year, which missed the top 10 entry with # 14 and was able to sell a total of 10,000 times.

In terms of her releases, it seemed to be getting quieter around Beni until she announced her first concept album entitled Shiki Uta Summer ( 四季 う た Summer) for June 29, 2016 . In an official information it was described that she would like to go a new way after the Covers series and would therefore publish a concept album. As you can already deduce from the title, this concept album relates to the theme of summer and, in addition to songs that have already been released, features a new recording of Eien ( 永遠 ), which is marketed as a marriage version , and other new songs.
