Benjamin Bramer

Benjamin Bramer , also Benjaminus Bramerus (born February 21, 1588 in Felsberg (Hesse) , † March 17, 1652 in Ziegenhain (Schwalmstadt) ) was a German artist , architect , master builder , geodesist and mathematician .

The son of a pastor grew up with his foster father, the mathematician Jost Bürgi . He was instructed by him; he never went to university.

In 1603 or 1604 he accompanied his foster father to Prague and in 1609 came back to Kassel . In 1612, Moritz von Hessen-Kassel appointed him the leading builder of Marburg Castle. In 1618 he advised Christian von Waldeck on the plans to build a church, but this was thwarted by the war. In 1620, under his leadership, the construction of fortifications began in Marburg city and castle. In 1625 he advised the Count of Solms on construction work on the fortress of Rheinfels Castle . From 1630 to 1634 he was responsible for the fortifications in and around Kassel. In 1635 he became the chief construction and financial manager of the Ziegenhain Fortress .

He developed mathematical instruments such as improvements to the proportional circle following Galileo Galilei , about which he published a book in 1615.
