Benjamin Franklin Cravatt (born April 13, 1970 in Houston , Texas ) is an American chemist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla , California .

Life

Cravatt earned a BA in History and a BS in Life Sciences from Stanford University in 1992 . In 1996 he received a Ph.D. from Richard A. Lerner at the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). with a two-part work on macromolecular and cellular structures and chemistry (Part I. Antibody-catalyzed syn elimination reaction to form a cis olefin. Part II. The Chemistry and biology of 9 (Z) -octadecenamide (Oleamide): A sleep-inducing lipid .)

In 1996 he received his first professorship (Assistant Professor) at the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI . In 2000 he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and in 2001 in the Department of Cell Biology and Chemistry at TSRI. Between 2002 and 2010 he was Director of the Helen L. Dorris Child and Adolescent Neuro-Psychiatric Disorder Institute at TSRI. Since 2004 Cravatt has held a full professorship in chemical biology . In the following years, various professorships for chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience were added. Since 2007 he has been Head of Biochemistry at the Scripps Institute.

Act

Cravatt is concerned with the effect and regulation of messenger substances , especially fatty acid amides , which mediate physiological phenomena such as pain , sleep or thermoregulation . In addition, he develops test substances for the proteomics of the active centers of enzymes and deals in general with the function of proteins and metabolomics . He characterized the cannabinoid- degrading enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) as an example and developed Activity-Based Protein Profiling (ABPP) to determine enzyme activity (instead of enzyme concentration) in the proteome of cancer cells .

Cravatt one of the founders of the biotechnology -Unternehmen Abide Therapeutics Inc. for the development of serine - hydrolases and ActivX Biosciences Inc. (2000) for the development of protein kinases and proteases , each as a drug .
