Benno Schaeppi

Benno Heinrich Schaeppi (born November 24, 1911 in St. Gallen ; † August 26, 1988 in Eckernförde ) was a Swiss journalist, a main figure in the front movement and Untersturmführer of the Waffen SS .

Life

Benno Schaeppi attended schools in Basel . In 1932 he graduated from business school in Zurich . Between 1936 and 1938 he was the national propaganda leader of the National Front and editor of the Schaffhauser Grenzbote . In 1938, together with Alfred Zander , he founded the Confederation of Loyal Confederates of National Socialist Worldview (BTE) and was arrested several times as a result. The following year he was sentenced to four months in prison for espionage for the German Reich . From 1941 Schaeppi was a leading member of the Federation of Swiss in Greater Germany . In 1941 he joined the Waffen SS as a volunteer and was transferred to the Eastern Front . Between 1942 and 1944 he was director of the “Panoramaheim” in Stuttgart . This was used for military espionage in Switzerland and as the first point of contact for National Socialist Swiss. In May 1943, Switzerland revoked Schaeppi's citizenship due to his political activities in the service of Germany . In the same year his book Germanic Volunteers in the East was published. In April 1944 Schaeppi came to the Junker School Tölz and received an officer training there. In October 1944 he rose to the rank of Untersturmführer of the Propaganda Company of III. Germanic SS Panzer Corps .

From May 1945 Schaeppi was an American prisoner of war and was released in June 1947 after a denazification process .

1947 Schaeppi presented voluntarily to the Swiss authorities and was from the federal court of military secrets, engaging in political intelligence and foreign military service to 16 years for the attack on the independence of the Confederation, injury prison convicted. Franz Riedweg was also accused . After two appeal proceedings, Schaeppi was released early from prison in August 1956. In 1955 he received German citizenship . Between 1958 and 1975 he was a correspondent for various newspapers and a representative of a German magazine publisher in Paris.

Schaeppi died on August 26, 1988 in Eckernförde .
