Benno Werlen

Benno Werlen (born October 10, 1952 in Münster , Canton of Valais ) is a Swiss geographer . He is Professor of Social Geography at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Life

Werlen studied geography, ethnology, sociology and economics at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) and graduated in 1980 with the "license Faculté des Lettres". He then worked as a research assistant in Kiel (with Dietrich Bartels ), Freiburg (with Jean-Luc Piveteau ) and Zurich (with Albert Leemann ) and senior assistant at the University of Zurich. In 1994 he received his habilitation there . In 1996 he was appointed to the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, where he was professor for social geography from 1998 to 2018.

Werlen was visiting professor at the Universities of Salzburg (1995/1996) and Geneva (2005), and was for research stays in Cambridge , at the London School of Economics and at the University of California at Los Angeles .

On his initiative, the three global scientific umbrella organizations, the International Social Science Council , the International Council for Science and the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies , declared 2016 the "International Year of Global Understanding". In the same year he received the Lauréat d'Honneur of the International Geographical Union .

Research priorities

Werlen's research focuses on the theory and empiricism of action-centered geography, everyday regionalizations, geography of power, communication and socio-cultural representation and regionalism / nationalism .
