Benzo [ e ] pyrene is a chemical compound from the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and contains five linked six-membered rings.
Occurrence
Benzo [ e ] pyrene is found in fossil fuels and is a product of incomplete combustion. It can be found, for example, in car tires , tobacco smoke , automobile and industrial exhaust fumes, and food that has been exposed to exhaust fumes. It is bound in particles in the atmosphere . Through wet and dry deposition, it ends up in the soil and water, where it is bound to particles and is difficult to break down.

Benzo [ e ] pyrene is a flammable, white to yellowish solid that is practically insoluble in water. It has a high bioaccumulation potential . It is also suspected of being mutagenic . Toxicity and carcinogenicity cannot be classified due to a lack of data, but there are indications of carcinogenicity.
