Benzoyl group
In organic chemistry, the benzoyl group is the C 6 H 5 - (C = O) - radical , which is composed of the phenyl group and the carbonyl group and thus corresponds to benzoic acid without its hydroxyl group . It is therefore an acyl group . The benzoyl group Bz is abbreviated . However, it is better to use COPh or the like in order to avoid confusion with the similar abbreviations of the benzyl group "Bn" and "Bzl".
Benzoyl groups can be introduced into alcohols , phenols and amines with the help of benzoyl chloride ( benzoylation according to the Schotten-Baumann method or according to Einhorn in pyridine ).
