description

Berberis ilicifolia grows as a shrub and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. Young twigs are dark red-brown, somewhat hairy, longitudinally fissured, with increasing age they become gray to yellowish. The leaf scars remain as semicircular, often corked humps. The thorns are usually in three parts, the sometimes curved thorn branches are between 0.4 and 1.2 centimeters long.

The leathery leaves are ovate, ovate-lanceolate to elliptical, 2 to 5 inches long and 1.2 to 2.2 inches wide; their color is glossy or matt gray-green on the top, lighter on the underside. The leaf margin has small bumps on the top and is covered with up to six teeth between 1 and 5 millimeters long, ending in thorns. The leaf is prickly, the spine at the tip of the leaf up to 4 millimeters long.

The racemose inflorescence is composed of three to seven flowers. The orange flowers are 0.5 to 1 centimeter long and have about 14 bracts .

The hemispherical fruits are about 1 centimeter long, have a style about 2 to 3 millimeters long and contain four to six seeds that are 5 to 6 millimeters long.

Berberis ilicifolia blooms in their home country from August to December; it is fruitful from November to March.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
