description

The deciduous (deciduous) shrub can reach a height of 1.3 meters; it has only a few soft thorns. The medium green leaves are obovate, up to 3.3 centimeters long and are partly whole, partly toothed. In autumn they take on a bright yellow color. The yellow flowers appear in May and are 5 to 10 in long-stalked clusters or umbels. The fruits are egg-shaped and red.

use

Berberis × ottawensis originated as a cultivated form and is often used as an ornamental shrub; it is hardy.

  • 'Auricoma' with intensely purple, later green leaves on the shoots; numerous yellow flowers that are tinged with red.
  • 'Purpurea' is a synonym for 'Superba'.
  • 'Silver Miles' dark red-purple leaves that are tinged with silver
  • 'Superba' can grow up to 4 meters high; the leaves are up to 5 centimeters long and are brown to black-red and have a metallic sheen; the flowers are reddish yellow; Plants of these hybrids can easily be confused with those of the Thunberg barberry ( Berberis thunbergii var. 'Atropurpurea').
