The Bergland is a yaw- rope catamaran which , as a passenger ferry , connects the districts of Oberrathen and Niederrathen on the Upper Elbe in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district of Saxony . It is registered as a technical monument of the district under the object document number 09223912.

history

The ship was laid down in 1954 under the construction number 121 in the Dresden shipyard Laubegast for VEB Nahverkehr Pirna. After completion, it was used as a ferry at km 22.7 on the Upper Elbe in the health resort of Rathen and approved for a maximum of 322 people. Today the owner is the municipality of Rathen.

The ship's shell was initially made of wood. In 1970 the ferry was rebuilt. The two floating bodies with a short curved chin and the superstructure of the vehicle are made of steel. The catamaran uses the current to cross the water with the help of a yaw rope . The hull is pushed to the other bank by the acting transverse forces. In contrast to the original yaw ferries , the Bergland uses two oars to position the hull transversely. Yellow barrels indicate the position of the yaw rope. If the ship is on the Oberrathener side, the river cannot be passed by other vessels at this point. The ferry is equipped with AIS technology.

In the winter months, the number of passengers will be reduced to 250 so that only one crew member is required to operate. During the season, the municipality has to use a second ferryman if there are more than 100 passengers on board. In 2011 a land revision was carried out.

In 2017 a single trip cost 1 euro and the return trip 1.80 euros (reduced 0.50 euros or 0.80 euros). The approximately 100 meter long crossing takes around five minutes.

Incidents

In 2016 there was a fatal accident involving a stand-up paddler who got caught in a greed barrel and drowned.
