Berlin Atonal

Berlin Atonal is an annual festival for visual art and sound art on two separate stages. It initially took place between 1982 and 1990 under the direction of Dimitri Hegemann and was revived in 2013 under new direction. At the festival, contemporary, interdisciplinary projects from the fields of sound art, visual art and media art as well as installations and performances with a focus on commissioned works and world premieres are presented. In addition to the main annual event, Berlin Atonal presents other subsidiary events such as The Long Now and New Assembly in Tokyo and has also collaborated with the German Symphony Orchestra, Dark Mofo and the Berliner Festspiele.

history

The first years of Berlin Atonal began in SO36 in Kreuzberg . Among other things, the musical artists Malaria! , Einstürzende Neubauten , Test Dept , Laibach , Psychic TV , 808 State and The Skin Promoted. During the 1980s, Berlin Atonal was best known in the progressive electronic and experimental music and art scene, where work was being carried out to bring together the newly emerging sounds of Berlin into a globally coherent movement. The festival ended in 1990 when its founder Dimitri Hegemann wanted to concentrate more on founding his techno club Tresor .

Current

Berlin Atonal was reopened in 2013 under new management at a new venue, the power plant in Berlin's Mitte district . The festival uses the 8,000 square meters of the former thermal power station to present audiovisual works, installations integrating buildings and artistic collaborations for a week. On average, around 170 musicians, producers and visual artists present their work each year.

Side projects

The Long Now is a collaboration between Berlin Atonal and the Berliner Festspiele that has been taking place every March since 2015. The project includes concerts, performances and audiovisual installations.

Lantern is a curated program for the Dark Mofo Festival hosted by the Australian art museum MONA .

Parallax was a collaboration between Berlin Atonal and the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , with a program ranging from classical baroque music to modern micropolyphony.

Berlin Atonal Recordings is a music label that publishes the festival's live performances.
