Berlin Rebel High School is a documentary by Alexander Kleid about the school for adult education in Berlin . For two years, dresses documented the life of a group of students, from the first information day to the announcement of the examination marks. The film premiered on October 16, 2016 at the Austin Film Festival. The film was released in selected German cinemas on May 11, 2017.

action

In his documentary, the filmmaker Alexander Kleid accompanies the pupils of a class of the School for Adult Education in Berlin (SFE) who are on their way to their Abitur and introduces the concept of the school, because it is different from other schools. The SFE was founded in 1973 as a grassroots project, and there is no director and no grades. The teachers and staff are paid by the students themselves, and all decisions are voted on every two weeks. The students also include Alex, Lena and Hanil. Alex is in his early twenties and has already been to over ten schools, but he has not stayed at any one for long because he could not cope with the rules and the school pressure. Lena, too, never really felt free at school or in the rural surroundings in which she grew up. Hanil from Aachen has so far seen no real sense in school. Kleid also allows some teachers to have their say, who simply enjoy imparting knowledge and want to do so without any pressure.

Staff and funding

Directed by Alexander Kleid , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The German documentary filmmaker studied communication sciences in Berlin after completing his training as a state-recognized educator in Schwäbisch Hall.

The production was funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg with 30,000 euros, by the German Film Funding Fund with around 40,000 euros, by the Board of Trustees for Young German Film with 20,000 euros and by the Film Funding Agency with 60,000 euros.

Filming and casting

Alexander Kleid directed the film and also wrote the script. He accompanied students from the school for adult education in Berlin , which is located on the upper floor of the building at Gneisenaustrasse 2a in Berlin-Kreuzberg , on their way to graduation

The film was shot at the school for adult education in Berlin , which is located on the upper floor of a building at Gneisenaustrasse 2a in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The school does not receive state funding, the students pay 160 euros a month, lessons don't start before 9:30, and if you want, you can bring your dog. The school's motto, which hangs as a banner above the entrance to the “Forum”, is “Self-administration is not a self-service shop”. At a plenary meeting in spring 2013, teachers and students decided that the director and his film team could accompany everyday school life.

Kleid says about the school: "People who no longer believed anything in mainstream schools feel the unconditional will to learn something for the first time." He also explains that it is not a question of completing the Pisa study with all ones. To lead children. Responsible people with joy in life are more important: “In this mad competition for good grades, we lack the courage. We are completely frightened when the lines are loose. ”In Germany around 50,000 young people leave school every year without a qualification; in Berlin there are around 3,000 school dropouts every year.

Kleid documented the life of a group of students for two years, from the first information day to the announcement of the examination grades. He filmed them not only in class, but also in their shared rooms and in their hometowns. The students who accompanied dresses include 26-year-old Mixe from Bavaria, 22-year-old Claudi from Karlsruhe, 19-year-old Aron from Berlin, 21-year-old Lena Christof from Eggesin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and 24-year-old Alex Bäke from Luckenwalde and the 23 year old Hanil Altunergil from near Aachen. Furthermore, Klaus Trappmann, who has been a German and art teacher at SFE for more than 40 years, is a secret hero of the film.

Reviews

Gunda Bartels from Tagesspiegel says the result was a philanthropic, sometimes almost fairytale film portrait that believes in the good in people and in the power of anti-authoritarian learning. The director Alexander Kleid packs self-knowledge into a flow of images generated by time lapse, steadycam, crane trips and drone recordings, rhythmically cut to the cool music of Eckes Malz , says Bartels. Berlin Rebel High School is not only fun in terms of content, but also aesthetically, and as in Maren Ades Toni Erdmann , the warmth of the cereal type teacher is re-appreciated in the film, according to Bartels.

From the German Film and Media Review was Berlin Rebels High School with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reason stated: “During 'Berlin Rebel High School' every viewer can remember their own school days or compare school with the experience of their own children. The successful portrait of this successful alternative model also stimulates thought about the sense of some of the reforms of the Abitur regulations in the 1970s and the G8 reforms. The school gives young people a chance who mostly unconsciously rebelled against the conventional system. "
