Bernd Brunner

Bernd Brunner (born May 27, 1964 in Berlin ) is a German author .

Live and act

After completing a bank apprenticeship, Bernd Brunner first studied business administration at the HWR Berlin, then American studies and cultural studies at the Free University of Berlin , the Humboldt University and, as a DAAD scholarship holder, at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After internships at ZDF, Deutsche Welle tv and Arte Strasbourg, he worked as an author and television editor (Holtzbrinck Fernsehproduktion), as a magazine editor (IHK Berlin) and as a non-fiction editor (Murmann Verlag, Hamburg).

Brunner lectured at the Goethe Institutes in San Francisco and Washington, at the Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley, at the Botanical Garden at the University of California at Berkeley, at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts and Culture in New York City and at the University of Zurich .

His book topics move at the intersection of the history of culture, science and mentality. He also writes for newspapers and magazines, including Süddeutsche Zeitung , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Die Zeit und Zeit Wissen . His contribution, The Wild Dogs of Istanbul , originally published by The Smart Set , was selected for the anthology Best American Travel Writing 2013 (edited by Elizabeth Gilbert , published by Houghton Mifflin ). Several of his books have also appeared in the USA / UK, Italy, Spain, France, Norway, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea.

In 2016 he became a Fellow and non-fiction resident of the Carey Institute for Global Good in New York. His books "Ornithomania", "When the winters were still winter" and "The invention of the north" were selected by "New Books in German" and recommended for translation into English.
