Bernd Meier (politician)

Bernd Meier (born December 28, 1944 in Cainsdorf near Zwickau ; † May 30, 2005 ) was a German politician ( SED / PDS ) and youth functionary ( FDJ ). He was the first secretary of the SED district leadership in Frankfurt (Oder) .

Life

Meier, the son of a carpenter who died in the war , had five other siblings. He attended elementary and high school in Cainsdorf from 1952 to 1962, joined the FDJ in 1960 and completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator in the Crossen-Mulde paper mill by 1963 . He then worked as an insulation plumber in the VEB Petrolchemisches Kombinat (PCK) Schwedt and in Crossen-Mulde. In 1963 he became a member of the SED. In 1964/1965 he did his military service as an official in Karl-Marx-Stadt, then worked in the VEB Chemische Werke Buna Schkopau and in the PCK Schwedt. In 1967/68 he studied at the district party school in Frankfurt (Oder). From 1968 to 1971 he acted as secretary of the FDJ district leadership Angermünde and Schwedt . From 1971 to 1974 he studied at the party college "Karl Marx" with a degree in social science . From 1974 to 1978 he was second secretary, from January 1979 to March 1985 as successor to Hans Andreas first secretary of the FDJ district leadership Frankfurt (Oder) and member of the central council of the FDJ. In Frankfurt (Oder) he was also a member of the SED district leadership from February 1979 to 1990 and its secretariat until 1985. In addition, since June 1981 he was a member of the parliament and chairman of the permanent commission on youth issues, physical culture and sport of the Frankfurt (Oder) district assembly.

From 1985 to 1989 he was secretary of the central party leadership of the VEB Petrolchemisches Kombinat Schwedt and party organizer of the Central Committee of the SED . On November 15, 1989 Meier was elected First Secretary of the SED district leadership in Frankfurt (Oder). On December 3, 1989, he was elected a member of the working committee for the preparation of the extraordinary party congress of the SED and on December 10, 1989 by this member of the party executive committee of the SED. From February to October 1990 he was a member of the presidium of the PDS. Since then he has been non-party. From March to October 1990 he was a member of the People's Chamber, a member of its Presidium and Parliamentary Director of the PDS parliamentary group.
