Bernd Merbitz (* 1956 in Zumroda ) was state police chief in Saxony from 2007 to 2012 and then police chief in Leipzig and head of the police department in Leipzig (Leipzig, districts of northern Saxony and Leipziger Land ) until the end of January 2019 .

Life

Bernd Merbitz studied from 1984 to 1986 at the University of the German People's Police in Berlin with a degree in political science. In 1989 he had the rank of major in the criminal investigation department . His area of ​​activity was the head of the murder investigation commission at the district authority of the German People's Police (BdVP) in Leipzig. From July 15, 1991 to August 31, 1998, Bernd Merbitz was head of the State Police Department at the State Criminal Police Office in Saxony and head of the special commission for right-wing extremism ( Soko Rex ). He then took over the management of the Grimma Police Department until December 31, 2004 . He then became police chief of the West Saxony police department. Since July 1, 2007, he has been temporarily head of the Public Safety and Order Department , State Police Headquarters in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior , replacing Klaus Fleischmann . On September 25, 2007, Bernd Merbitz was appointed state police president.

With effect from October 1, 2012, he took over from Horst Wawrzynski as police chief of the trade fair city of Leipzig. He retired on February 1, 2019, and was followed by Torsten Schultze in office.

Bernd Merbitz was a member of the SED until 1989/1990 . After the fall of the Berlin Wall he became the CDU parliamentary group leader in the district assembly of the Muldental district . Since 2008 Merbitz has been a member of the state executive committee of the CDU Saxony . Merbitz has been married for a second time since 1998 and has two daughters. Merbitz was baptized Protestant and was an atheist; In 2012 he converted to Catholicism and then successfully campaigned for the 100th German Catholic Day in Leipzig in 2016.

For the state elections in Saxony in 2019 , Merbitz ran for the CDU as a direct candidate in the constituency of North Saxony 3 , where he was defeated by the AfD candidate Gudrun Petzold (33.3%) with 31.6% of the first votes .

On September 19, 2018, Merbitz was elected President of the sports club SC DHfK Leipzig . On February 1, 2020, Merbitz left the CDU. Compared to the Leipziger Volkszeitung he stated that he would devote himself more to sport and "still want to move a lot for the SC DHfK Leipzig".
