Political positioning

In early 2017 he published the book Das Gespenst des Populismus . An essay on political dramaturgy (Verlag Theater der Zeit ). He calls the beginning of the 21st century “the age of populism” and sees “Trump, Brexit and election victories for right-wing populist parties in Europe” as clear signs. In his opinion, the usual suggested reactions and solutions fall short of the mark. Stegemann demands a fundamental discussion and sees the only solution in the self-criticism of liberalism; At its core, it is about the conflict "between the global power of capital and people". The Tagesspiegel sums up that Stegemann "calls for left-wing populism that opposes the right-wing and against the liberal populism of the majority society".

Stegemann supports the idea of Oskar Lafontaine and Sahra Wagenknecht to found a left collecting movement, a non-partisan initiative that is supposed to bring together the scattered left. Since it was founded, he has been the chairman of the association “ Stand Up Support Association Collection Movement”. Stegemann could be "regarded as the gray eminence of this new organization", wrote Adam Soboczynski , "as a figure who is not in the foreground, but has the greatest influence as an advisor."
