The settlement began in 1852, when German-speaking Mennonites from the Bernese Jura settled in what is now Berne. The opportunities to sell agricultural products were limited due to the lack of transport routes. When the railway companies built more and more lines, the residents of Berne saw their chance. The Hilty brothers made the proposal to the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad to surrender land to the railway company for free in exchange for the construction of a station in Berne. This agreed and the route was inaugurated on Christmas Day 1871. New buildings were built and a post office was opened in Berne in 1872.
