Bernhard Bair (* 1955 in Zams ) is an officer in the Austrian Armed Forces and was deputy chief of staff with the rank of lieutenant general .

Life

Bernhard Bair was born in Zams in Tyrol in 1955 and joined the armed forces in September 1973 after graduating. Following his officer training at the Theresian Military Academy from 1976 to 1979, he was deployed as a lieutenant in various posts in Supply Regiment 1 in Zwölfaxing , including as a company commander, field weapon officer, supply officer and training officer.

From October 1981 to May 1982 Bair acted as the company commander of the Austrian contingent of UNFICYP in Cyprus , completed general staff training at the National Defense Academy from 1985 to 1988 and was chief of staff of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Linz from 1992 to 1993 . He was then employed as the head of department and deputy head of department in the quartermaster department in the Ministry of Defense .

In 1999, Bair completed the "European Training Course in Security Policy" at the Center for Security Policy in Geneva , served from September 1, 1999 to November 30, 2002 as a defense attaché at the Austrian embassy in Zagreb and then took over the command of operational support for the armed forces

On December 4, 2009, Bair took over command of the EU troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina , consisting of around 2000 soldiers from 25 nations, from Italian Major General Stefano Castagnotto , which he handed over to Austrian Major General Robert Brieger on December 6, 2011 .

On August 9, 2013, Bair (now with the rank of lieutenant general ) was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Federal Army and held this position until his retirement on March 31, 2018. During his time as Deputy Chief of Staff, Bair completed the “Senior Executives in National and International Security” (NIS) seminar at Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge in December 2013 and in 2015 took part in the 12th Strategic Leadership Course at the National Defense Academy of the Armed Forces.
