Bernhard C. Lippold (born December 25, 1939 in Altenburg / Thuringia) is a German university professor and pharmacist . He is Professor Emeritus for Pharmaceutical Technology and former Director of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Life

Bernhard C. Lippold studied after a two-year internship (1958-1960) in Munich from 1960 to 1964 pharmacy at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich and received his license to practice as a pharmacist after the candidate period in 1965. After writing a dissertation at the Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry at LMU Munich with the title “Binding and stabilizing capacity of homologous polyethylene glycol fatty alcohol ethers for nicotinic acid esters; polarographic behavior of the reaction partners ”(Head: Elsa Ullmann ) he obtained his doctorate in 1969. rer. nat. From 1969 to 1970 he was a postdoc with Prof. Edward R. Garrett at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Florida (Gainesville), where he dealt with biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic issues. In 1975 Bernhard C. Lippold qualified as a professor at the LMU Munich for pharmaceutical technology, with a focus on biopharmacy, with the text "Physico-chemical investigations on medicinal substances and dosage forms with regard to their biopharmaceutical behavior"; he was appointed private lecturer in 1976. In 1977 Bernhard C. Lippold was appointed director of the newly founded Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and was appointed professor , which he held until his retirement in 2005. 

Scientific work

The focus of the scientific work of Bernhard C. Lippold is 

  • Active ingredient penetration through skin and nails and their control,
  • oral sustained release pharmaceutical forms, in particular functional coatings and hydrocolloids,
  • Optimization of the solution properties of poorly soluble drugs.

The results of his scientific work can be found in 138 publications and several book publications. Bernhard C. Lippold successfully led 41 doctoral students and two post-doctoral candidates to a doctorate or habilitation . He is co-owner of an international patent.

Professional political activities and committee work

In addition to his work in the self-governing bodies of Heinrich Heine University, Lippold was an active member of the transparency commission at the Federal Health Office , the Pharmacopoeia Commission at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices , the Pharmacy Training Commission at the Federal Ministry of Health, the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (IMPP), the working group for Pharmaceutical Process Engineering (APV), the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG) and Scientific Advisory Board at the Central Laboratory of German Pharmacists (ZL).

Beginning in 2002, Bernhard C. Lippold was involved in rebuilding the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Kabul (Afghanistan) by helping to further qualify pharmaceutical scientists from Afghanistan. a. as coordinator of the “Pharmacy Summer School” in Düsseldorf and also as a lecturer several times on site in Kabul

Since 2004 Lippold has been a scientific adviser to the Galenus Private Foundation in Vienna. The foundation has set itself the task of attracting outstanding young scientists ( postgraduates ) in pharmaceutical technology, biopharmacy, etc. a. through financial support and the Galenus Technology Prize, which is awarded every two years and is endowed with € 5,000.

Detached from the extensive professional obligations, he now runs a small vinotheque and kilim gallery as an emeritus together with his wife in his new adopted home Berchtesgaden.
