Bernhard Dahm (born August 30, 1932 in Kirchen (Sieg) ) is Professor of Non-European History and held the Chair of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Passau from 1984 to 1997.

Life

Bernhard Dahm, the second son of the pastor Wilhelm Dahm and his Sumatra- born wife Margarete (née Beisenherz), grew up in Burbach- Niederdresselnorf . After being in Dillenburg / Hessen Graduated from 1952 Wilhelm von Orange-school had taken off, he studied at the universities of Marburg and Kiel , first German and English literature and later history and political science . After the state examination in Kiel in 1960, he received a scholarship to study Indonesian history and culture in the Netherlands. After receiving his doctorate in Kiel (1964) study trips to Southeast Asia and invitations to the Department of Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University in the USA followed, initially as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Lecturer, from January 1972 to July 1973 again as a visiting professor in the department there of History.

In the meantime Bernhard Dahm had completed his habilitation at the University of Kiel, where he taught non-European history from 1973 to 1984. When the chair for Southeast Asian Studies was established at the University of Passau in 1984, Dahm was appointed the first chair holder and remained its head until his retirement (1997).

One of the main focuses of his teaching was the often overlooked after-effects of pre-colonial cultural traditions in the Southeast Asian states that became independent after the Second World War. During his tenure, seven international conferences were held in Passau on these and other topics relating to modern Southeast Asia.

For his work José Rizal . The national hero of the Filipinos , history professor Dahm was awarded the German-Filipino culture prize in Berlin in 2010.

Bernhard Dahm has been with Elke born in 1961. Vieth married and has two daughters.
