Bernhard Kock (philologist)

Bernhard Kock (full name Johann Bernhard Kock , born March 14, 1885 in Ochtrup ; † November 2, 1973 ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director.

Life

Bernhard Kock, the son of the innkeeper Bernhard Kock, attended elementary school (1891–1897) and the rectorate school (1897–1901) in Ochtrup and, from 1901, the Paulinum grammar school in Münster, where he received his school-leaving certificate on March 27, 1906. He then studied Classical Philology and German at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau (summer semester 1906), Münster (winter semester 1906/1907 – summer semester 1907 and winter semester 1908/09 – summer semester 1910) and Berlin (winter semester 1907/08 – summer semester 1908). On October 8, 1910, in Münster, he was awarded the title "magna cum laude" as Dr. phil. PhD ; In his dissertation De epigrammatum Graecorum dialectis , which Peter Sonnenburg had supervised, he dealt with linguistic questions of the Greek epigrams. He passed the first state examination in Latin, Greek and German with the grade “good”.

After graduation, Kock completed the seminar year at the Schillergymnasium Münster (April 1, 1911– March 31 , 1912) and the probationary year at the Bocholt grammar school (April 1, 1912– March 31, 1913), where he was employed as an assistant teacher on April 1, 1913 has been. On December 1, 1925, Kock went to the state high school in Emmerich am Rhein as director of studies . On November 1, 1926, he became headmaster (senior director) of the grammar school on Burgplatz in Essen , which he headed until October 31, 1945. Then he moved to the Landfermann-Gymnasium in Duisburg , whose director he was until his retirement (April 30, 1951).

In the post-war period, Kock was involved in education in many ways. He tried to found the municipal evening grammar school, of which he became the first director (May 1, 1950). He headed the evening grammar school until October 31, 1958, and taught Latin there until March 31, 1962. He also took part in the re-establishment of the German Classical Philologists Association: After a conference in Lüdinghausen (January 1949), he carried out the preparatory work together with Alfred Stephany and was recognized for the constitution of the DAV at the conference in Mönchengladbach (June 2-4, 1950 ) elected first chairman. One of the most important tasks was the revitalization of the association magazine and international relations. Kock organized a Franco-German working conference with 20 participants each from both countries, which took place from November 3 to 12, 1951. After the association conference in Marburg at Pentecost in 1952, which the DAV organized together with the Mommsen Society , Kock resigned from the chairmanship and was appointed honorary chairman of the DAV.

In 1960 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, for his services . On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the magazine Gymnasium published a congratulatory address with a short résumé.
