Life

Bernhard Kremser was born near Dresden in 1954 and grew up in Lauta (Niederlausitz). His parents, both of whom were musically gifted, recognized his talent for drawing early on and encouraged his artistic training as a child. After graduating from the Lessing High School in Hoyerswerda in 1972 , Kremser began a socio-educational training program for Caritas in the GDR . He had not previously been admitted to study art at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts because he had repeatedly criticized the real socialist one-party dictatorship and refused to do military service with the GDR border troops .

In order to complete an artistic training under the circumstances in the GDR, Kremser trained as a wood sculptor . Until he left the GDR in 1988, Kremser lived and worked in Parchim .

After moving to Bonn , Kremser worked as a freelance artist with a focus on room installations , sculpture and drawings. Bernhard Kremser has lived in Görlitz since 2003 and has a studio there, in which he also teaches.

The artistic work

After figurative beginnings with drawings, linocuts , woodcuts and wood sculptures, Kremser turned to more abstract methods of representation in the 1990s. Bernhard Kremser was represented with a solo exhibition in the Palazzo Albrizzi under the title "Bernhard Kremser - Disegni e Sculture" in 1997 at the Biennale di Venezia .

With his "Sankt-Ansgar-Pilgerkirche" in Hall 8 of Hamburg Messe during the 94th German Catholic Day in Hamburg, an artist in Germany for the first time left all conventions of sacred architecture.

In 2002, Kremser installed 20 oversized cigarette sculptures for one night on Düsseldorf's Rheinuferpromenade for an event by management consultancy McKinsey & Company .

In addition, Bernhard Kremser also designs sculptures that are used as prize sculptures. Bernhard Kremser also works as a dramaturge and actor. He staged Goethe's Faust for the Piccolo puppet shows . Bernhard Kremser has worked as an actor in various theater productions and films, most recently in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel .
