Bernhard Kriegbaum

Bernhard Kriegbaum SJ (born September 1, 1944 in Berlin ; † August 3, 2021 in Innsbruck ) was a German religious and Roman Catholic theologian and church historian in Rome and Innsbruck.

Life

Bernhard Kriegbaum came from a mixed denominational family. After elementary school in Berlin-Tempelhof , he switched to the Canisius College in Berlin , where he graduated from high school in 1963. In the same year Bernhard Kriegbaum entered the Jesuit order .

After his novitiate in Berlin-Kladow, he studied philosophy at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach near Munich from 1965 onwards . The Interstiz took him back to Berlin to the Canisius College. He then came to study theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Innsbruck . On April 27, 1972, he was ordained a priest in Berlin. At the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , he completed a doctoral degree in ancient church history, patrology and Christian archeology. In 1984 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the prehistory of Donatism with Peter Stockmeier in Munich.

From 1980 to 1994 Bernhard Kriegbaum held the professorship for Ancient Church History at the Ecclesiastical History Faculty of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. At the same time he was visiting professor at the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum several times . After graduating in 1988/89 in Wernersville , Maryland , USA, he took his final vows on June 22, 1990 in Rome. In 1994 he finally returned to Tyrol when he was appointed professor for church history at the University of Innsbruck. He held this office until his retirement in 2012.

In addition to his university engagement, Kriegbaum has always been pastorally active, including in the Bürgersaal in Munich, in Gramais, in Tessenberg / East Tyrol and since 2012 as vicar in the parish St. Nikolaus in Reith near Seefeld , where he lived until 2020 after his retirement. He belonged to the Jesuit community in Innsbruck, where he died of cancer on August 3, 2021 in Innsbruck's Vinzenzheim of the Sisters of Mercy.

Works

Bernhard Kriegbaum's research focus was on ancient Christianity. He made important contributions to the history of the early Church in North Africa . In addition, he has dealt intensively with the history of the Jesuit order and the Church in Tyrol. An example of this is an anthology on Bishop Paulus Rusch .
