Bernhard Thalheim (born March 10, 1952 in Radebeul ) is a German computer scientist and university professor of the chair of information systems technology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . He published fundamental articles on conceptual modeling and the theory on which it is based.

Life

From 1971 to 1975 Thalheim studied mathematics at the Technical University of Dresden . In 1979 he was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD in Discrete Mathematics from Lomonosov University . In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Dresden in the field of theoretical computer science .

From 1986 to 1989 Thalheim was a lecturer at the Technical University of Dresden. He then taught and researched from 1989 to 1993 as a professor and chair holder at the University of Rostock . From 1993 to 2003 he was dean and professor at the Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus . Since 2003 he has been Professor of the Information Systems Technology Chair at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

In addition, Bernhard Thalheim was visiting professor at the University of Kuwait from 1988 to 1990 and in 2004, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008 visiting professor at the University of Klagenfurt (Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt) in Austria . In 2003 he was visiting professor at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in 2006 visiting professor at Massey University in New Zealand .

In 2005 he was appointed Kolmogorow Professor e. H. the Moscow State University and was the world's fifth scientist who was honored in this way. On October 22, 2008, he received the Peter P. Chen Award for his outstanding contributions to the research area of conceptual modeling.

He is the founder of the German branch of DAMA, is Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the FoIKS conferences and a member of the Steering Committee of other conferences, including a. ER, ADBIS, ASM and NLDB. He is editor of Data and Knowledge Engineering and other journals and a member of Dataport's advisory board .

Scientific contributions

Conceptual modeling

Thalheim published fundamental articles on conceptual modeling theory and the science of conceptual modeling on different levels of abstraction and areas of application. These include the higher-order entity-relationship model he developed , the book Dependencies in Relational Databases and Chapters 6, 12 and 17 of the Handbook of Conceptual Modeling .

The Higher-Order Entity-Relationship Model (HERM) and the book Dependencies in Relational Databases serve as the basis for system analysis and design methods, CASE tools and repository systems. The HERM is the basis for a number of commercial projects in Germany and Europe and is cited as a reference for the fundamentals of database management systems and entity relationship modeling .

The HERM developed by Thalheim has its roots in APG Brown and its invention of the Entity-Relationship-Model -concept, but also picks up on other, fundamental ideas from earlier work, such as B. by Peter Chen , which were mainly developed and promoted by practitioners.

Conceptual modeling for IT fundamentals

Scientific articles on the topic of conceptual modeling foundations and theory forming span an area of IT problem-solving work, such as B. the semantics in databases for generalized, functional dependencies for a user-friendly database design; Co-design as a holistic approach for collaboration and cooperation in the design of information system applications; Micro, meso and macro level of the work processes of users for the development of collaboration frameworks for distributed web information systems; the conceptualization of theories in various application areas as the basis for content management systems; Model suites as design theory and the basis of multi-model engineering for dealing with information system models and their complexity when evolution occurs; Business process modeling and notations that go beyond the modeling of business processes lead to the basics of database management; and the systematic development of Internet sites for the development of web information systems.
