Bernhard Tschofen

Bernhard Tschofen (born June 17, 1966 in Bregenz , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian cultural scientist and European ethnologist . He teaches and researches at the University of Zurich .

Live and act

Bernhard Tschofen studied folklore and art history at the University of Innsbruck from 1984 to 1986, and empirical cultural studies and art history at the University of Tübingen from 1986 to 1992 (MA 1992). After working in museums and exhibitions a. a. At the Austrian Museum for Folklore in Vienna, he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Folklore / European Ethnology at the University of Vienna from 1995 and became active in 1999 on the basis of his dissertation on Mountain - Culture - Modernism. Folklore from the Alps at the University of Tübingen for Dr. rer. soc. PhD . In 2001 he completed his habilitation in European ethnology and was appointed associate professor at the University of Vienna. From 2004 to 2013 he was Professor of Empirical Cultural Studies at the Ludwig Uhland Institute at the University of Tübingen. Since 2013 he has been Professor of Popular Cultures at the ISEK - Institute for Social Anthropology and Empirical Cultural Studies at the University of Zurich .

Bernhard Tschofen has been Vice-President of SIEF - Société Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore since 2017 and was a. a. from 2001 to 2004 second deputy chairman of the German Society for Folklore , from 2004 to 2007 Vice-President of the Society for Folklore in Vienna and from 2008 to 2013 member of the board of the SIEF. He is a member of the board of directors of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHS) as well as advisory boards of various scientific and cultural institutions in Austria and Switzerland.

His research and teaching focus is on regional ethnography and cultural-scientific spatial research, cultural analysis of everyday life, knowledge cultures and museum studies.
