Bernhardin of Raunach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhardin von Raunach , (* approx. 1450; † approx. 1526) came from one of the oldest noble families of Carniola . He was a knight , civil servant, military commander and holder of high offices.

coat of arms

Shield quartered, 1 and 4 split from silver and black, each with an inwardly curved hunter's horn with the tip pointing upwards in mixed up colors; 2 and 3 in silver a red ring; on the shield two crowned spangle helmets: the right helmet has red and white covers with a ring like 2 u. 3, the left black and white blanket with hunting horns like 1 and 4th

family

Bernhardin's parents were Jakob von Raunach, who still lived in 1470, and N. von Barnis, sister of Nikolaus von Barnis, who was wealthy in Senosetsch. Raunach's wife, Genovefa von Freyberg, came from a Swabian aristocratic family that still flourishes in Württemberg as barons of Freyberg - Eisenberg. Several children emerged from this marriage. Friedrich, the eldest son, succeeded his father as owner of Bremb in 1526. Bartholomäus was Uskok captain in Safe Mountain , the daughter Margarethe married Joachim von Thalheimb, the imperial stable master, and Jakob took over Schillertabor and, like his father, was a district captain on the Karst. Andree Gall de Mötnick is named Bernhardin's brother-in-law and Georg and Johann von der Dörr are named as his "cousins" by marriage.

Military actions

From 1507 to 1512 Raunach was district captain in Austria ( Istria ) and Karst ( Innerkrain ) with his seat in Adelsberg . At that time Austria was waging war against Venice again. In one of the last actions of 1508, in which the Austrians were not particularly lucky in war, Raunach and the Count of Frangepan defeated a Venetian detachment of 200 men. Part of it was captured, the Bremb fortress was recaptured and Venice's initial successes were put to an end. The following year, the cities of Duino , Pisino , Trieste , Fiume and Neuhaus were captured. The belligerent bishop of Laibach, Christophorus Rauber , forced the Venetian fortress Rasspurg to surrender, which he then handed over to Bernhardin von Raunach to manage.

At the imperial court

In 1512 Raunach was appointed to the Imperial Councilor . As a member of the court council in the immediate vicinity of the emperor, we find him with other Carniolan monks, the provost and later bishop of Vienna, Georg von Slatkonia , Dr. Paul von Oberstein, who studied theology in Padua and Bologna, first as cabinet secretary to the emperor and since 1519 as court counselor, baron Leonhard von Rauber as high court marshal , as well as Hans Rauber, the knight Wilhelm Scharff, Jakob von der Dörr, captain of Mitterburg .

Raunach was also called to the deathbed of Emperor Maximilian I , who died on January 12, 1519 in Wels . In his report dd Bremb of May 4, 1519 to the governor and the decreed in Carniola, Raunach describes that the will of the emperor was read out by Hanns Brenner. However, Raunach could not tell whether it was the emperor's original will or a copy, since from a distance neither a seal , secretion or signet could be seen. The request to give him a copy of the will was refused.

Use Raunachs in different missions and commissions

In 1510 Raunach took part in the Reichstag in Augsburg. In 1511 he was part of the commission that, after the death of the last Count of Görz Leonhard, on behalf of Maximilian I, as Archduke of Austria, had to negotiate with the local nobility.

In the years 1515, 1517, 1518 Raunach belonged to other commissions and committees that represented the state of Carniola in various matters. He seems to have been a man of the emperor. When the Carniolan estates, in a letter of July 25, 1518, appointed Emperor Bernhardin von Raunach to be the authorized representative for the purchase of silver and copper, Maximilian's answer was: "When you informed us that Bernhardin Rawnacher had bought our silver and copper solution let us put up with it. "

From 1519 to 1523 Raunach held the office of Land Administrator of Carniola. In a codex in 1519, Erasmus von Dornberg appears as a steward alongside Raunach. But Dornberg and Raunach are together in a court commission , with Raunach having priority over the administrators . In the same code, Raunach also appears as a court commissioner , as well as an arbitrator and control body of the governor and the decreed in a criminal case.

Raunach as a tournament fighter

Raunach was also an avid tournament fighter. He was one of the few knights who threw Caspar von Lamberg from the saddle in the tournament , which was preceded by the reputation of invincibility.

possession

On May 10, 1512, Emperor Maximilian Raunach enfeoffed with the keep of Schillertabor (Šilentabor), and in 1521 Raunach appears as a pledge holder of Bremb (Prem).
