The Bert Swart Bridge ( Dutch Bert Swartbrug ) is a railway bridge in the Dutch province of Groningen that crosses the Van Starkenborghkanaal .

history

The old railway bridge (2012)

ProRail awarded the contract to build a new railway bridge on the site of the old overpass. Arcadis was awarded the contract for the architectural and technical design of the bridge, while Max Bögl was commissioned with its construction. Construction work began in spring 2016. Although completion was planned for 2018, the bridge was pushed in on July 8, 2017. On October 2nd of the same year the first trains were able to pass the bridge. At the same time, the old bridge was torn down. The railway bridge was officially renamed Bert Swartbrug on April 25, 2018 . It is named after Bert Swart , who was mayor of the municipality of Zuidhorn from 2011 to 2017 and who died of a brain tumor on June 29, 2017. In memory of Swart, his widow and son unveiled a sculpture near the bridge. The bridge was nominated for the Nationale Staalprijs and the BNA Beste Gebouw van het Jaar .
